The works included the demolition of the existing operating theatre block, the construction of a 2,704m2 three storey building consisting of 51 new bedrooms, ancillary facilities annexed to the existing hospital, a new fire escape staircase to the west gable end of the existing building, a physiotherapy area and a canteen on the ground floor. The health and safety challenges involved planning for the extension to be constructed on a functioning hospital campus in adherence to all statutory duties and guidelines, without interruption to the delivery of services.
