<p>The facility consists of two large connected industrial buildings designed to a very high acoustic, thermal insulation and air-tightness standard. Housed within Building 1 are large autoclaves to steam treat the raw waste and separate recyclable waste materials. Building 2 houses pyrolysis plant to convert the treated waste to gas which in turn is converted not electricity by gas fired generator. The electricity will be fed into the UK national grid.</p>

<p>The Riverside improvement works to quays in Limerick city centre are one of the central elements of this strategy and include, underground services diversions, road and footpath resurfacing, erection of a cantilevered boardwalk over the River Shannon and extensive landscaping works. It’s a project with many health and safety issues such as traffic management and working over water which needed careful consideration as part of the design process.</p>

<p>The design hopes to create a “fluid progression” between the Garden of Remembrance, which commemorates those who died for the cause of Irish freedom, with a memorial dedicated to the young victims of abuse and will include a lighted walkway, water feature and trees. It is currently under consideration for planning permission.</p>

<p>The works are very extensive involving the partial demolition of water tower, an extension built onto the house in the early 19th century, stripping back and re-slating all existing roof, complete re-plastering of the house internally and externally, complete replacement of existing windows and doors throughout, strengthening of existing floors and complete upgrade of all associated electrical and plumbing services and fittings.</p>
<p>Phase 2 of the project involves the construction of a micro hydro electric generator on a river that passes through the estate.</p>

<p>The project has required detailed safety planning and phasing as part of the design stage to ensure the existing hospital continues to function without risk to patients or staff and in particular, that traffic movements, both pedestrian and vehicular, can be safely maintained for the duration of the works. Safety planning issues also involved addressing existing extensive services diversions as part of the enabling works (without interruption of hospital services); planning for the erection of a bailey bridge over the river Lee to facilitate construction works, and the removal of the existing traffic bridge and design of a new of a new permanent, and larger traffic bridge over the river.</p>

Assure Health &amp; Safety Consultancy Ltd. were appointed Project Supervisor Design Process (PSDP). To assist Assure HSC in delivering this important statutory role on seven projects across such a wide geographical area, Michael Keyes of Aegis Safety Management has been appointed Health and Safety Coordinator Design Process, and has been given responsibility to assist the PSDP for the new schools to be constructed in Tramore, Co. Waterford, Gorey, Co. Wexford and Doon, Co. Limerick.</p>

<p>These projects were constructed on existing busy hospital campuses that had to remain functional for the duration of the works. The works had to be planned, phased and carried out so as to minimize interruption to traffic movement on this extremely busy hospital campus. One of the major health and safety risks on both sites involved dealing with existing underground services. Due to the critical importance of maintaining services on a hospital campus each stage of these enabling works involved serious safety implications for patient safety were treated as separate projects involving the preparation of specific staged Preliminary Safety &#038; Health Plans identifying the particular risks involved in each element of the works.</p>
